Days in *NICU is isn't the way it thought to be. Everyday is a war time where any patient can deteriorate very fast. So, the rule is better make sure you know all your stuff before you're managing any patient in the ward.
Everyone in the ward has to be well-trained including all the nurses without exception although they still caught some troubles here and there everyday. Anyway, the nurses here are 100% far more experienced in handling any emergency neurosurgery case than in any other ward and also from where i am from. All of them area capable of making clinical decision and to inform the doctor immediately if something terrible is happening to the doctors.
Monitoring in ICU is using a system called "Carevue", a computerised system whereby they enter all the observation from patient's daily monitoring. Everything including the vital signs, medications, PU/BO, I/O investigation etc are all charted out for easier monitoring.
